This month we had the pleasure of seeing Whitney Houston in concert here in Vienna. After a postponement of the original date - because of her personal health problems - we were hoping everything would be alright this time round. We certainly weren't disappointed.

The warm-up group who accompanied Whitney Houston was also a group worth seeing in their own right. Amanda Marshall has a powerful, well controlled voice which reminded us of a certain Taylor Dayne. Miss Marshall certainly is a talent of the future.

Whitney Houston herself sang for about 2 hours. In that time sang both old and new songs. For her it must've felt like a family affair, as brother Gary was one of the backing vocalists and husband Bobby Brown was constantly encouraging her and dancing to his wife's music on one side of the stage.

The songs she performed included "Heartbreak Hotel", "If I Told You That", "I Learned From The Best" and the gospel "I Was Made To Love Him", all from her new album 'My Love Is Your Love'. She also took us back in time with her 80s' classics such as "How Will I Know", "Saving All My Love For You" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody".
During a short break midway through her set Gary Houston took over the vocals for the Eric Clapton song "Change The World". His voice was just great to listen to, very smooth. To say that the Houston family is musically inclined certainly would be an understatement.

Unfortunately one person who was far from being talented at the concert was Bobby Brown. He jumped on stage during one of her songs and started a kind of rapping chant (jungle sounds?) which - not just in our opinion, judging by people's conversation afterwards - was completely throwing the show and unnecessary, to say the least.

All in all though, the concert was something not to be missed, specially not forgetting Whitney's problems with her throat she obviously still had to deal with during the show, judging by the medication she kept taking and her voice nearly broke on two occasions.

Not too many pop stars or groups from the 80s have been able to carry their success into the 90s, but one exception to the rule is definitely Dionne Warwick's niece, Whitney Houston.
