IN FEBRUARY 20 YEARS AGO ....


 
 
 

   the Ska Revival music scene hit America when The Specials tried their luck with a six week tour of the states. The Specials who had already found fame in England with the hit "Too Much Too Young" were obviously apprehensive about playing in front of large crowds of people who hadn't even heard of them. The group needn't have worried as they had soon set the audience alight and the tour became a huge hit.


   after selling 25 million albums,winning 25 gold albums and having a career together that spanned 11 years Emerson,Lake and Palmer finally disbanded.


   the fans and group alike of AC/DC were stunned when it was announced that their lead singer, Bon Scott, had been found dead. Early reports suggested that the vocalist had been left by a friend in the back seat of a car to sober up after a heavy nights drinking. Unfortunately he was found unconscious in the same position the next morning and pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.


   Ginger Baker who had found fame with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce with the super group Cream had his attempt of a comeback with the band Energy dashed by the critics who greeted his London Marquee date with the headline "Ginger Dead".


   Paul McCartney was again a free man after serving a ten day jail sentence in Japan, after being found guilty of possesion of marijuana. The unrepentant McCartney released a statement saying that the older generation make marijuana out to be some terrible thing. He then declared that "we are all on drugs cigarettes, whiskey and women".


   among the stars doing the business in the American single charts this month were Michael Jackson "Rock With You" and Queen's "Crazy Little thing Called Love". As for the American album charts there was only one winner this month with Pink Floyd "The Wall". In the U.K Madness with "My Girl" and Kenny Rogers' "Coward Of The County were at the top of the singles charts. The Pretenders with the same named album and "The Last Dance" from Various Artists both ruled the top spot of the album charts.





.... 26 YEARS AGO ....




   on February 14th Bob Dylan brought his tour with The Band to an end with an outstanding performance before a star studded audience which included Ringo Starr, Jack Nicholson, Carole King and Neil Young. His former concerts in America had been described by some as the best of all time. That opinion was apparently shared this time as well as he was forced back on stage for encores with "Maggies Farm" and "Blowin In The Wind"


   a quote from Marianne Faithfull, "My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend. I slept with three and decided that the lead singer was the best".


   would the real Fleetwood Mac stand up please? That was the case in America. A dispute broke out between the original band and manager Clifford Davies when a group using the same name toured America.


   Mott The Hoople singer Ian Hunter published "Diary Of A Rock And Roll Star" which went on sale in the U.K priced 50 pence.


   disaster struck for Keith Emerson when he performed a San Francisco concert. A rigged piano prematurely exploded causing the artist to suffer injuries to his hands.


   tragedy also struck Bobby Bloom - who had the hit with "Montego Bay" four years earlier - when he shot himself to death. He was 28 years old.


   Diana Ross was voted best female singer by the NME readers poll while David Bowie picked up the best male singer award. Other awards went to Stevie Wonder (best soul act), "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd (best album) and Bernie Taupin & Elton John (best songwriters).


   hitting the right notes this month in the American single charts were Barbra Streisand with "The Way We Were" and Love Unlimited Orchestra with "Love's Theme". The album charts in the States were being ruled by Bob Dylan's "Planet Waves" and Jim Croce with his "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". In the U.K The Carpenters topped the charts for the entire month with "The Singles 1969-1973" while Mud's "Tiger Feet" and Susi Quatro's "Devil Gate Drive" topped the single charts.
