IN APRIL 14 YEARS AGO ....


 
 
 

   Stevie Wonder found himself in hot water at the Oscar ceremony for dedicating his award for best song to the then imprisoned African national congress leader Nelson Mandela.


   Simon Napier Bell, ex-manager of the famous pop duo WHAM!, was negotiating with the cultural attaché of China to make WHAM! the first western group to perform in that country.


   A Beatles album with unreleased tracks was axed by the 3 surviving members of the group, Ringo, Paul and George. The album, recorded in the Abbey Road Studios, was titled "Sessions" and covered the years '63 to '69.


   Rumours were being spread that the pop group POLICE were to split up for good, which was denied by the members themselves, but proved to be true in the end.


   Jimmy Sommerville, singer of Bronski Beat, announced his leaving due to exhaustion.


   at the beginning of the month Phil Collins was flying high on both sides of the atlantic with the LP "No Jacket Required". He wasn't doing too bad in general, also topping the British single charts with "Easy Lover", a duet with Phil Bailey and the US45 charts with "One more night".
