IN AUGUST 24 YEARS AGO ....

it was a month of group splits and disagreements.
Rod Stewart announced The Faces' split-up after a number of arguments with members of the group.
Also, Ronnie Wood became a permanent fixture with the Rolling Stones.
Peter Gabriel left Genesis and claimed that he wanted to absorb a wide variety of experiences (not sure what exactly he meant).
The on-stage antics of the WHO was also happening backstage when Pete Townshend had an dispute with lead singer Roger Daltrey. Tempers flared and Pete Townshend ended up getting a punch to the head from the fiery Daltrey.

Alice Cooper was in trouble, having been sued by Warner Brothers for not making enough commercially successful albums.

Bruce Springsteen played 10 concerts in New York. The venues were sold out in advance and around 600 people lined up just for the remaining 50 standing-tickets still available.

Flying high that month in the charts were the Eagles with both the single "One of These Nights" and album of the same name. Another chart topper were the Stytistics with "The Best of", Rod Stewart with "Sailing" and Wings with the album "Venus and Mars".

.... 11 YEARS AGO ....

450 fans were injured and 2 died at the Monster of Rock Festival in Donnington, England. The cause was blamed on slam-dancing which occurred whilst Guns 'n' Roses were performing. Other groups at the event included Iron Maden, David Lee Roth, Kiss and Megadeth.

The Greatful Dead beat Neil Diamond's house record when they played 9 days at Madison Square Gardens.

George Michael was under fire from Freddie Jackson in the "L.A. Times" over his black music chart success. JEALOUSY?

a controversial book by Albert Goldman about John Lennon went on sale, in which he describes Lennon as a homosexual heroin-addicted hermit during his final years. The surviving Beatles urged the public not to buy the book, claiming that it was trash.

"Running all over The World" was released by Status Quo with all proceeds going to "Sports Aid '82".

topping the U.S. singles charts were George Michael's "Monkey", and Stevie Winwood's "Roll With It" whilst in the U.K. Glenn Medeiros' "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You" and Yazz and the Plastic Population's "The Only Way Is Up" were climbing to the top.
