IN OCTOBER 30 YEARS AGO ....


 
 
 

   Diana Ross announced that she would be leaving The Supremes to start a solo career in early 1970. Mary wilson will take over as the lead singer of the group and the group will be joined by Jean Terrell. Both Diana Ross and "The New Supremes" as they were later known continued to record under the Motown label.


   Cliff Richard signed a new three year deal with Warner Bros for U.S releases.


   Steve Peregrine Took and Marc Bolan go their separate ways, although they agreed that Marc Bolan could keep the groups name "Tyrannosaurus Rex", which he later shortened to "T.Rex".


   the multi talented Christine Perfect who was the former wife of John Mcvie, left the group "Chicken Shack" and formed her own group. Later her career really took of when she joined her then husband in the group "Fleetwood Mac".


   The "Moody Blues" formed their own record label which they called Threshold Records.


   although denying recent rumours of a split, Eric Clapton added more fuel to the stories of the disbanding of the group "Blind Faith" when he went on tour as a member of the group "Delaney and Bonnie and Friends".


   in the charts this month were "The Archies" with the hit single "Sugar Sugar" which topped the U.S charts also doing well in the U.S charts were "The Temptations" with "I Can't Get Next To You". In the U.K the album charts were topped by "The Beatles" with "Abbey Road", whilst Bobby Gentry hit the top spot of the sigle charts with "I'll Never Fall In Love Again".






.... 19 YEARS AGO ....




   David Bowie found fame in a different direction when he starred as John Merrick (the elephant man) on Broadway


   ex punk rockers Joe Strummer and John Lydon were both in trouble with the police. Lydon faced three months behind bars for assaulting two men in Dublin. Strummer on the other hand found himself face to face in a confrontation with police outside Kings Cross railway station. The police apparently found a handgun and various other substances which were not disclosed.


   back on stage Jerry Dammers from "The Specials" was in trouble. He was charged with the breach of the peace after a concert in Cambridge.


   another star who was in trouble (and this time through no fault of his own) was Ray Davies of "The Kinks". He was arrested in Portland America whilst on the latest leg of their U.S tour. He was accused of borrowing money, dodging hotel bills and hiring limousines without paying. He was subjected to several hours of questioning. Later it came to light that the crimes had been carried out by a double using his name.


   eleven years after leaving "Tyrannosaurus Rex" and Marc Bolan. Steve Peregrine Took(real name Steve Porter)was found dead in his London flat age 31. The cause of death was that he choked to death on a cherry pip after he had taken a cocktail of drugs.


   Geffen Records were celebrating after announcing the signing of John Lennon for his comeback.


   Queen were back on their thrones in the charts with "The Game" which topped the U.S album charts and "Another One Bites The Dust" which sat on top of the U.S singles charts. In the U.K The Police were sounding their call to the public with the hit single "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and the album "Zenyatta Mondatta" which both hit the top spots. It was also a good time for David Bowie "Scary Monsters" and Barbra Streisand with the single "Woman In Love" and the album "Guilty".
