IN NOVEMBER 36 YEARS AGO ....

the world was in mourning this month with the assassination of John F Kennedy. Record producer Phil Spector immediately scrapped an all star Christmas album out of a mark of respect. He said in a statement later released. "Nobody's going to want happy Christmas songs this year". On the album were traditional favourites sung by such stars as The Ronettes, The Chrystals and Darlene Love.

touring the U.K this month were The Shirelles, Little Richard and Duane Eddy.

the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon enjoyed a concert from The Beatles who performed at the years Royal Variety Performance at the Prince Of Wales Theatre in London. The unnerving John Lennon certainly brought the audience to laughter. When half way through their set he requested. "For the next number would the people in the cheaper seats clap their hands and if the rest of you would just rattle your jewellery". The Queen Mother and family responded by rattling their jewellery.

folk music was taking a battering from the english Sunday tabloids. Who claimed that the present folk music scene weas just subversive tactics from The Kremlin to poison young minds. They claimed that the music was having a brainwashing effect on the younger generation and the singers Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary were communists.

Peter, Paul and Mary despite the claims topped the U.S album charts for the entire month with "In The Wind". Whilst The Beatles did the same in the U.K album charts with "Please Please Me". They also topped the single charts with "She Loves You". Other hits this month were Gerry And The Pacemakers "You'll Never Walk Alone" Nino Tempo & April Stevens "Deep Purple" and Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs "Sugar Shack".

.... 15 YEARS AGO ....

the trio ZZ Top who consist of two men with long beards and a third with a moustache, who is called beard hit the U.K charts with the album "Eliminator". The video for the single "Gimme All Your Lovin" features a 1932 vintage coupe car and glamourous ladies. The bass player Dusty Hill admits that the group are car freaks.

a quote from Annie Lennox: "When I was younger I thought, I wanna be artistic. I thought I could make myself artistic somehow. But I discovered it doesn't happen like that. It just develops".

"Like A Virgin" became the second album from Madonna to be released. Although the album was successful it received indifferent views. Maybe it had something to do with the title.

Spandau Ballet and Culture Club proved competitive towards one and other in a different way. Both groups tried to perform more concerts than one and other at Wembley Arena.

"Too Late For Goodbyes" became the debut single for J.Lennon. This time though not John, but Julian.

Ozzy Osbourne was receiving helping hands from Slade's Noddy Holder and Don Powell. The two were spotted helping Ozzy dressed in a sequin dress at a Hammersmith Odeon encore with Waysted. Maybe he was drunk.

This month seemed to be a month of concert recordings from various groups. "Real Live" Bob Dylan " Real To Reel" Marillion "Arena" Duran Duran "Who's Last" The Who and aptly titled "Concert" from The Cure were all released.

a certain George Michael and Wham were singing "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" at the top of the U.S single charts and "Make It Big" was doing just that by sitting at the top of the U.K album charts. Sharing the month with Wham at the top was Billy Ocean "Caribbean Queen" Prince topped the U.S album charts with the funny colour rain namely "Purple Rain" and singing that he was "Born In The U.S.A" was Bruce Springsteen. Other chart toppers this month were Chaka Kahn "I Feel For You" and Frankie Goes To Hollywood with "Welcome To The Pleasure Dome".
