At the tender age of twelve she learned how to play the guitar and started to write songs.
In a statement years later she said, "when I became famous people didn't know what to think of my appearance and were very apprehensive about approaching me. However now the situation has reversed as my change in appearance isn't unique anymore, because everyone is trying to look different".
In 1977 she sang with many different cover bands , but struck stardom in the early eighties.
Cyndi
Lauper was first categorized as a singer who only found success because
of her outrageous looks on her videos. However she soon proved all the
critics wrong when in 1984 hit after hit, such as "Girls Just Want To Have
Fun", "Time After Time" and "She Bop" were released.
Candid
songs were written from her own feelings as she once stated. "It is very
difficult to pass feelings across into something that is only heard for
three or four minutes".
After
the success of the album "She's So Unusual" she thought her musical ideas
and feelings were temporarily exhausted and she decided to take a break
from the music industry.

In
1986 she swept back into the charts with the album "True Colors". Both
album and also the released single with the same title sold very well and
Candid was given a Grammy Nomination. Several well known musicians appeared
on the album, such as the likes of The Bangles, Billy Joel and Nile Rodgers,
just to name but a few.
In an interview she was asked why she has taken so long to release a new album. She replied, "I just thought that something was missing from the album and it has taken me until now to find that something". |
In 1989 she released the album " Night To Remember" and from the album the hit single "I Drove All Night".
In 1991 she did something that she said that she would never do, she got married to David Thornton. The couple were read their non-traditional vows by a certain Mr Little Richard and their chosen song was sung by the one and only Patti Labelle.
Other albums and musical works soon followed for Cyndi, including "Twelve Deadly Cyndi...And Then Some" and "Sister Of Avalon". From the latter album she had, once again, a lot of success with various released singles.
In
1997 she proudly announced that she was expecting her first child. This
'minor' detail however didn't stop her from supporting Tina Turner on tour
for three months in the same year.
On
November 19th 1997
Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper was born.
Now
it remains to be seen whether she will continue her music career.
